Since the birth of the organization at the hands of Begum Raana Liaquat Ali Khan, APWA has carried out extensive programs & activities on major issues of gender, the most memorable of which is firstly the pursuance of the government in 1961 to pass the family law ordinance which successfully introduced the registration of marriage, minimum marriage age, regularize divorce procedure and inheritance law for orphans. Other remarkable achievement is instigation of multi-project centres' for women, schools, dispensaries, maternity homes, family planning clinics (urban & rural), regional institutes of higher education including the prestigious APWA college Lahore, The college of Science & Arts Karachi, college of home economics both in Dacca & Karachi, income generating schemes like Gul-e-Raana industrial home, cottage industry shops & craftsman colony Karachi.

 

APWA has viewed with great concern the poor status of the women. Its main concern has been is the Primary Health Care including Family Planning and Safe Motherhood initiatives to under privileged women and girls in urban slums and rural areas. APWA's approach is through integrated multi-dimensional programs and projects that have combined primary health care with several components of reproductive health, including adult literacy, primary education, skill development, nutrition, legal rights, maternal care and family planning.

 

APWA uses a community based approach for improving impoverished women's health and family planning and to improve general awareness and understanding of family planning among potential users.
